Realms of Light: Progress Report Ten

Chapter Five has been posted.

I’m actually still three bucks short, but that’s not worth fussing about.

I’m part of the way through writing Chapter Nine, and the plot has mutated in interesting ways, adding several complications to what I’d originally planned.

I’m still not seeing much in the way of discussion, which worries me.

  1. I’ve been waiting for after the holidays to start reading the story. With NaNo, then rewriting what I’d written, and vermin in the house…um…I mean family visiting for the holidays, I didn’t have the time.

  2. I’m sorry but cyberpunk is not my cup of tea. I’m just keeping track so I’ll know when the next Ethshar novel is available.

  3. Well, I’m starting to wonder how Carlie is going to get out of this with everything she wants, or IF she will. Her brother’s condition in the last paragraph of this chapter seems to be an aggravatingly difficult snag.

I think part of the reason that there isn’t as much discussion here is that Nightside City was one book, whereas Ethshar novels generate a lot of discussion concerning the mythology, the physics, the mechanics of magic, and a host of other issues that have evolved as the series has.

For example, I’m wildly curious about the nature of warlockry and the towers in Lumeth, not to mention the poison gas, but as far as Promethius and Epimethius are concerned, I’m just not that invested in how the software works. Until more details become germane to the story, I tend to be content that it just works and move on with other areas of the story. Maybe if the Dream tech is explained in detail or if some other aspect of the environment stands out and becomes enigmatic in some way, that might generate the kind of discussion that typically accompanies the Ethshar serials might arise.

By the way, the header for the current chapter still says that it is “the second chapter” of the first draft. I checked and Chapters 3 and 4 also say this.

  4. Fixed. Thanks again.

I wonder whether it being a mystery where I haven’t really introduced most of the suspects yet might be an issue, as well. Perhaps this is not a story ideally suited to the serial format.

  5. Not very good. Less than halfway to paying for Chapter Six.

I’ve been distracted with more urgent matters for the past couple of weeks, so I haven’t been pushing it.

  6. Well, I’m hoping things eventually turn around.

If they don’t though, and money just continues to trickle in, would you kick Realms of Light out of the Serial-mobile and load another book into it (presumably an Ethshar one)?

Hope the urgent matters resolve themselves well.

  7. (presumably an Ethshar one) = The Final Calling (couldn’t remember the title when I wrote the above post).

  8. There’s room for more than one serial at a time; I wouldn’t kick Realms of Light out, I would just add The Final Calling.

But we’re still well short of that eventuality.

  9. You know, that might not be such a bad idea. Your Ethshar serials bring in more people. Maybe some of them will check out the other serial and support it as well.

Or maybe the opposite will happen and people will shift from Nightside to Ethshar, and Nightside will die off. There’s only one way to find out.

But I don’t think you have the time to juggle 3 books simultaniously.

  10. I’m sorry, I’m afraid I can’t work up any enthusiasm for the current Realms of Light serial.

But ‘The Final Calling’ would definitely get me to stump up with donations towards the cost of the next chapters. Hopefully you’ll be able to start that sooner than planned.

  11. No insightful commentary on my part, but I have been interested in the story and would like to continue reading it. Unfortunately, I think that without a fresh source of people coming to the site to consider whether they want to contribute funding the project is in trouble – the subset of Ethshar fans who are interested in this story is not going to suffice.

  12. Oh, I think I can scrounge up a few more people; I’ve just been too busy with other things, unrelated to writing, to work on publicizing it as much as I should.

    We’ll see.

  13. Still not enough money for a chapter? How about a status update for those of us who might be disposed to donate if it’s close.

  14. I don’t have time to do a real status report right now — things are unbelievably busy, but should ease up significantly Friday.

Short version, from memory, is that we’re at $1,487, with the next chapter due at $1,500. It’s very close.
