Chapters Four and Five are paid for.
I’m still in the middle of writing Chapter Nine; I’ve been busy with family stuff and Vika’s Avenger.

One small nit: in “…a hungry, thirsty, journey…” the second comma is incorrect and should be omitted.
You’re right. Fixed.
I wonder if maybe the talisman has imprinted on Ishta, and will find its way back to her by some sorcerous equivalent of the Spell of True Ownership. Or maybe, even though “the woods are not littered with them,” there’s more where that came from, and the Companion of the title has yet to appear.
The companion has yet to appear. I’m kind of surprised anyone would think otherwise.

So the talisman appears to be a MacGuffin. Sounds like this would inspire Ishta to keep her curiosity intact, but start being more secretive about what she finds in the woods.
I must admit at this point I have no idea where this story is going. It feels like it is at a point where you would have introduce something new to take it anywhere so I am expecting…the companion.
I’m still holding out for the talisman being a measuring stick.
