Chapter Fifteen has been posted

Chapter Fifteen is up.

I have six bucks toward Chapter Sixteen. Haven’t yet written Chapter Seventeen.

No news on The Spriggan Mirror; so far as I know, it’ll start shipping by the end of the week, but I’m sure we remember what happened last time I thought that.

There’s a change in plans regarding the publication of the finished novel. After all the delays with The Spriggan Mirror, I have decided that I don’t intend to make anyone wait a year for their copy of The Vondish Ambassador. Therefore, it’s my intention to do a privately-published, limited first edition — probably about 400 copies. Anyone who’s donated $25 or more will get that, rather than waiting for the eventual trade edition — well, unless they ask to wait; if you’d rather have the trade edition, okay, but then any delays are your problem.

The exact form of the limited first edition isn’t yet determined, as I haven’t yet talked to printers and binders about costs. Or to artists.

I’ll be working out details in weeks to come.

  1. Very enjoyable chapter. I wonder about Gita, after the Lord found it necessary to whisper instructions to the driver.

I also like your plans for a first run. I’ll have to pony up some more money to get in on that.

  2. For the first time in recorded history, the number of governments in the Small Kingdoms, in Old Ethshar, had decreased. For the first time.”

Does “recorded history” not go back alot further than the war, or does recorded history basically start with Ethshar being founded, so there was 1 government until Ethshar fell?

  3. Recorded history only goes back to the middle of the Great War, unless you count legends, but it doesn’t matter, as what’s now the Small Kingdoms was always one unified political entity until then.

  4. The exact form of the limited first edition isn’t yet determined, as I haven’t yet talked to printers and binders about costs. Or to artists.

May I suggest a scroll, onionskin paper, on a hickory spindle? With the ghost of Al Capp as artist?

    No?

    I’ll get my coat.

  5. Recorded history only goes back to the middle of the Great War

I guess that is due to any archive records being stored in Old Ethshar and/or just a lack of literacy?

Interesting that their recorded history basically starts with a trial by fire, where the ‘evil’ northerners were defeated.

  6. Nice chapter.

I’m guessing that he instructed the other guard to follow her discreetly after dropping her off in Shiphaven. If she’s taking coin from the foreigners, then she’d be likely to run to them with the news (to get more coin.)

I like the limited first edition option.

  7. I also like the Limited Edition…

As for donations, lets give it a few days, as thedonations seem to come. Can we estimate what we need to go to finish this book ? I know it’s ‘whatever it needs to finish the story’ but can you SWAG a guess? We can then see what sort of $$$ we are looking at.

  8. So far we’ve not run out of donations, so I’ll worry when that happens, and not a moment before that. Imagine how many are reading this who have not ponyed up any dough.

  9. I have not because I am waiting for tSM to come out. I plan on paying for both at the same time as I am using a credit card.

  10. Sounds reasonable to me.

Actually, I’ve been surprised at just how steadily the money’s been coming in; I haven’t yet added it up this week, but I’m expecting to probably post Chapter 16 on schedule. Probably.

But as has usually been the case of late, there probably won’t be much over.

Which, if you ask me, means I set the price about right.
